Penny For Your Thoughts By: Nancy Whitaker
There is just not anything better tasting than a big red tomato and bread and butter sandwich. If there is anything I look forward to in summers garden, it is tomatoes.
I have never been a gardener or had a so called green thumb. My grandma could grow big juicy tomatoes and Kentucky Wonder Beans which were about 6 inches long. Many an afternoon was spent sitting on the porch and snapping those beans. After our work was done, we would be treated to a big glass of grandmas sweet iced tea.
A few weeks ago I acquired a small wooden wheelbarrow. My friend, Denny tightened it up and I had to make the decision of where to put it. The white old looking wheelbarrow found a home right outside of my front door. It looked pretty good in its new home, but something was missing. I really did not want to put any dirt or potting soil in it because of the cats and squirrels around. So I decided a potted plant or two would fit just fine. Denny and I made a trip to a local farm store and looked at the flowers to see what was available.
It didn’t take too long before I spotted these big potted tomato plants, complete with pot and a plastic cage. I was so excited because one of the plants already had small green cherry tomatoes on it and the other one was big, tall and healthy looking. These two tomato plants turned out to be my Mothers Day present. Just think, maybe I could grow some tomatoes and not kill them.
The plants fit perfectly in the wheelbarrow and I was very careful with them. When it gets windy I bring them in so they don’t get their vines broken.
I said a few prayers over these plants and hoped that God was listening. The next step I did was to put Miracle Grow on then. (Maybe I felt like God needed a bit of help.)
I wonder how long it takes for tomatoes to ripen? The little cherry tomatoes are to be yellow and the other plant should provide me with at least one big tomato.
A lot of people like fried green tomatoes, but I have always fried the red ones. That is good eating too.
Usually everything I have ever tried to grow dies because I water it too much or not enough. Does anyone know if there is any type of gadget to put in a plant which will tell you it needs watered?
I waited patiently for a little ripe tomato, I prayed that I have an abundance of the red, juicy fruit. Yum
Well, those tomato plants had quite a story. First of all I went outside one morning and every little tomato was gone. The squirrels had ate every last one. I moved plants inside but they needed more sunshine. Finally Denny took them to his house and replanted them.? He said they produced a few tomatoes, but….. guess what…. he ate them.
Now I think, I’ll go to a farmers market or the store and buy them. Easier that way!
Do you like tomato sandwiches? Do you have a green thumb? Dp you grow tomatoes ? Let me know and I’ll give you a Penny for Your Thoughts.
