Penny For Your Thoughts By: Nancy Whitaker
I used to be so nosy when I was younger and it has been said that I asked so many questions that my nickname became “News Reporter.” My Mama would do her best to answer every question I could think of, but today finds me just as curious as I have always been.
I used to lay on the grass as a youngster and just look up at the sky and clouds. I would wonder, “How can Heaven fit in those skies? Where are the streets of gold and will I be able to sing with the angels?”
I have always had quite the imagination and tend to always think about the, “What ifs” What if I won the lottery? What if someone stole my purse? What if I fall out of bed? What if the world ran out of chocolate? What if my car breaks down? What if I would have married Elvis? What if? What if? We all wonder about all sorts of things.
Every time I see frog legs, I wonder, “Why do they only eat the legs? What happens to the rest of the frog’s body? I feel so sorry for them and I wonder how we could “save these unfortunate legless creatures?”
I know I have a love for animals and I am so glad I do not raise any cows or pigs, goats or chickens. Even though I like pork chops and steak, I know I would make them all pets, give them names and not want to eat them. I wonder why I feel so much better eating a steak from the meat market than from a cow I know by name? I have so many unanswered questions!!!!
I am still wondering along with a lot of other people, “Who let the Dogs Out?” “Where’s the beef?” “How do I get to Sesame Street?” “Why do all flavors of fruit loops taste exactly the same, or how many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop?” “Why are eggs packaged in a flimsy paper carton, but batteries are secured in plastic that’s tough as nails?” In fact, I just tried opening a package of batteries and it took me 2 pairs of scissors and a screw driver to hack them open.
Why is “abbreviated” such a long word and why is there a D in ‘fridge’ but not in refrigerator? Why is lemon juice made with artificial flavor, yet dish-washing liquid is made with real lemons?
Why do they sterilize the needle for lethal injections? Why does The Alphabet Song and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star have the same tune? What is Victoria’s secret?
Why doesn’t McDonalds sell hot dogs? Are eyebrows considered “facial hair?” Do vegetarians eat animal crackers? How do you handcuff a one armed man? (maybe the police can answer that one).
These are not all of my wonderings, but I bet we all tend to wonder the same things.
Here is my favorite wonder, Why do we have to “put our two cents worth in” but it’s only a “Penny for your Thoughts” where’s that extra penny going to? Well tell me your thoughts and I will give you that extra penny.
