DOGS, CATS & ALLIGATORS

Penny For Your Thoughts By: Nancy Whitaker

Even though I have no pets now, I have had my share of dogs, cats, fish, gerbils, mice and even sea monkeys. I re- member those sea monkeys looked like a lot more fun on the package than they actually were. Our sea monkeys looked like specs of dust that really did not do much.

We did have to add something to a pitcher of fresh water when we added water to their fish bowl. I always put the mixture in the refrigerator and never thought anything of it. One day I came home from work, and I noticed the sea monkey water was gone.

I asked my kids, “Where is that sea monkey water?” Of course daughter number one spoke up and said, “I drank it.” It did not hurt her but it was probably my fault for not labeling the water.

I have had a variety of dogs during my lifetime beginning with Rover 1, 2, and 3. After I got married, we had a little dog named Dino. Dino was just a small little dog, but at that time dogs could go visiting the neighbor dogs and everyone in town knew Dino.

One year our little town had a Halloween Parade and a celebration. Me and my two little girls dressed up and walked proudly down the parade route thinking no one would know us. Well somehow Dino followed us and walked right behind us in the parade and everyone said “That must be The Whitaker’s cause there is Dino.”

We have all kinds of stories about our pets, so here are a few: Two dogs in Massachusetts, Winston and Rosie, were playing together in their back yard. They got excited and ran into a drain pipe behind their property and down a hillside.

The two dogs were trapped for several hours and the police was called. Brother and sister emergency workers Tyler and Brooke Dechene were able to monitor the dogs by dropping a probe into the pipe which eventually helped guide the dogs to safety after five hours. Now Winston was the smaller dog and he could have got out, but he would not leave Rosie. She was the one really stuck and he would not come out without her. Neither of the

dogs were injured during the rescue, but their owner said the curious pets tried to go back into the pipe just minutes after being rescued.

Here in the USA police use drug dogs sometimes to find drugs and contraband. How- ever, over in Australia, the crows are willing to do that instead. The crows are “snitches” because surveillance cameras are filming the birds fishing bags of drugs from trash cans where they were hidden.

Now anyone who has had a chicken farm or even ate chicken knows that they will more than likely wind up on someone’s dinner table.

A popular football player got more than he bargained for when he ordered some chicken wings. In the middle of all the yummy wings was a full head of a chicken. (poor thing) The Packers player said, ” It had the eyes, beak and tongue” Be warned this may have put him off of eating chicken wings for the whole season. I have always said this, “I am go glad that God didn’t make me a chicken.”

Over in Beaumont Texas, the owner of Gator County and his team caught a 13-foot, 8 inch alligator. The huge gator was captured at Champion Lake. The animal is settling into his new surroundings swimming around in owner, Gary Saurage’s private pool. The gator , named Big Tex broke state record for size.

A Nebraska family got a little kitten. They happened to notice it’s little nose was swollen and did not know what to do about it. So they took the young kitty to the local vet who looked into its nose. And, that is where he found the night- mare growing in the kittens nose.

It was not a tumor or a dis- ease but a huge bug called a cuterbra larva which infests small animals when they spend a lot of time outdoors. Apparently the kitten had a sore on its nose in which the parasite entered. The little cat was so small, that it had the surgery with no drugs.

Regardless of what kind of animal or pet you have I am sure we have all kinds of stories

that are humorous, sad, and those which are heroic and brave. Do you have any stories to tell about you and your pet or pets? I could share a lot more, but it is your turn. Tell me and I’ll give you a Penny for Your Thoughts!
