The meeting began with the board recognizing the academic accomplishments of senior Leila Spyker. Leila was recently awarded the National Rural and Small-Town Award by the College Board (see photo).
Vantage Board Rep. Dennis Recker shared that Antwerp has 36 students attending Vantage Vocational school and provided a breakdown of the programs Antwerp students are involved with.
MS/HS Principal Travis Lichty thanked staff, students, and the community for a successful Homecoming week event. Reviewed major events coming up in the next few weeks.

Superintendent Dr. Miller reported to the Board that construction has begun on the Wellness and Recreation Center (see related Ground-Breaking Commencement Photo). Dr. Miller also shared that Friday, September 22nd is an In-Service Day. Topics for the In-Service include Project Based Learning, and game-based math and reading programs. Information was also shared with the Board regarding a school safety drill that will be held in mid-October in conjunction with local law enforcement.
Dr. Miller shared two items of good news with the Board including: U.S. News and World Report recently released their rankings of the “Best High School in America” and that Antwerp H.S. was ranked 58th out of 741 High Schools in Ohio and top 20% in the nation. In addition, Dr. Miller stated that Ohio’s State Report Card on schools was released last week and Antwerp Local earned 4.5 stars on the 5-star system.
Dr. Miller also informed those in attendance to mark their calendars for Wednesday, October 11th. U.S. Paralympic athlete/World track and field record holder and motivational speak Blake Leeper will speak at Antwerp Local with MS/HS students during the school day and conduct an evening session with parents and students.
The Board approved a list of volunteers for the fall athletic season, approved an extended trip for the yearbook staff to NSPA/JEA Fall convention in Boston, MA November 1-5, 2023, and approved two calendar changes; a two-hour In-Service Delay for October 27th and all-day In-Service day for April 8th, 2024.
