LEAPING LIZARDS

Penny For Your Thoughts By: Nancy Whitaker

Well, we know that every 4 years we have what is known as a Leap Year and 2024 is the year. The last leap year was in 2020.

If you happened to be born on Feb 29, from what i have read you are called  Leaplings.

This is because a birthday on February 29th is the least probable of all birthdays. The probability of being born on a leap day is 1/1461. However  approximately 4.8 million people from across the globe do  claim a leap year birthday.

1. Ladies,, here’s your chance!    Women can propose to men on leap day and a Leap year Ireland is full of weird and wonderful facts and traditions, but it is fair to say that this one is the most well-known.

29th of February 2024 is the opportunity for women to take matters into their own hands and pop the question.

Women are of course capable of proposing at any time of the year, but this day has been reserved traditionally in Ireland for women to get down on one knee.

2. Is Leap year  bad luck

Some cultures avoid getting married on a leap year as they are seen as bad luck. Italian proverbs warn women that leap years are likely to make them erratic and urge them to avoid making any big life decisions until the leap year has ended.

There is no evidence to support the marriage theory, however, two major events occurred during leap years, which some consider a sign of bad luck. These leap year events include ancient Rome burning in 64 AD and the Titanic sinking. (it was a leap year).

Leap year folklore also contends that beans and peas planted during a leap year “grow the wrong way”. ~Rob Leigh.

Here is a cute poem by Pauline Frances Camp

I am a little fellow,

Though I’m always up to date.

The days I hold within my hand are only twenty-eight;

But I just save my moments up,

And count them o’er and o’er,

Till in four years I’ve saved enough to make up one day more.

But little folks that kindly are, and pleasant in their play,

May save enough in far less time to make a happy day.

~Pauline Frances Camp, “February,” in St. Nicholas, February 1906
