Valerie and Jack Baughman purchased the Bittersweet Inn from Phillis Crossland in October 2018. Together, Valerie, a former schoolteacher, and Jack, a retired U.S. Air Force serviceman, who now serves in business consulting, manufacturing management and enjoys coaching area businesses toward stability and income growth, live in the lower level of the Bittersweet Inn. They operate this boutique hotel plus five small houses as short-term rentals in Paulding, Van Wert, and Fort Wayne.
There are five private second-level rooms that have well-insulated walls for noise dampening. Each room offers queen bed, desk, wardrobe, ensuite private bath, individual room heat and AC, fast WiFi, Roku TV, mini fridge with freezer, microwave, coffee maker and coffee, and pack-n-play. Additionally, two rooms offer pull-out sofa, and two rooms include a range. Individual laundry services are offered upon request.
The venue offers guests small community, off-highway lodging, in a safe neighborhood adjacent to a retirement community. This allows a quiet rest with maximum comfort and room amenities.
Phillis Crossland originally purchased this large home, plus an adjoining fourteen acres, in the mid-1990’s. She immediately remodeled the home to become a bed and breakfast that included upstairs rooms, with ensuite bathrooms and kitchenettes. Phillis, and her daughter Susan, offered breakfast during the initial years of operation. It was then decided to operate the business exclusively as an Inn thereafter.
Once the Inn was operational, the Crosslands began development of the Bittersweet Village to the north of the Inn. This is a wonderful, high-quality new neighborhood of condominiums for those fifty-five and older.
For more than 28 years, the Bittersweet Inn has been privileged to welcome guests into Paulding from all 50 U.S. states and from other countries around the world. There have been reservations including any amount of time from single night reservations, to stays for as long as and exceeding, one year.
The Bittersweet Inn encourages visits to Airbnb.com to view more than six hundred guest reviews, and to view their YouTube video named Bittersweet Inn. They advertise through Airbnb.com, Booking.com, VRBO.com, Furnishedfinders.com, and Facebook.com, as well as through phone reservations and walk-ins. Guests usually self-check-in through the door key code. The Inn accepts cash, business checks, and all major credit cards.
