Military History in Paulding County

Charles George Lucas was born in Perrysburg, Ohio, October 22, 1892. The son of Joseph L. born June of 1864 in Ohio and Anna (Buckhart) Lucas born 1865 in Wood County, Ohio. This couple was married October 13, 1891 in Wood County, Ohio. 

By 1900, this couple were living in Carryall Township raising two sons, Charles born 1892 and Harold R. born February 1898, Joseph was a farmer. On October 17, 1901, Joseph and Anna was blessed with a son Earnest Clement Lucas. 

By 1910, Charles was helping his dad in the field. The other two sons were in school. On June 5, 1917, Charles George Lucas registered for the draft. He was living at 266 P.O. Box Antwerp. He went to Carryall west precinct to register. He was listed as tall, slender build, light blue eyes and light hair, single, and working on the farm. He listed that he had a physical disability. 

On July 22, 1918, Charles was inspected and passed his physical and was accepted into the national army out of Paulding. He was sent to Camp Sherman, in Chillicothe, Ohio to serve with 5th Company 2nd Training Battalion, 158th Depot Brigade. While in training camp, Charles came down with influenza. He was taken to the hospital for treatment for about three weeks. 

Friday, October 11 at 4:45 p.m., with his parents by his side, Charles passed away from pneumonia. On Sunday, October 13, Charles body arrived back to Antwerp. His body was accompanied by Sergeant Dupes. On Tuesday, October 15, funeral services were held at the Lucas residence north of the river Services were led by the Rev. Fred Branch of the Payne Catholic Church. Charles was buried in the Maumee Cemetery, Antwerp in lot 60, in grave 5. 

His parents, Joseph and Anna with sons Harold and Earnest, lived on. In 1930, Joseph passed away. He was buried with his son at Maumee Cemetery. By 1940, Anna was living with her son, Harold, who still was farming but living outside Antwerp. His brother Earnest, helped out on the farm. 

On February 16, 1942, Earnest registered for the World War Two draft. Listed at 5’8″, 145 pounds, ruddy complexion, brown hair and blue eyes. 

On April 27, 1947, Anna passed away. She was buried in Maumee Cemetery with her husband and son. On May 29, 1951, Harold passed away in Toledo, Ohio. He was returned to Antwerp and was buried with his family. On September 14, 1988 at 3:30 A.M. at Parkview Hospital in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, Earnest passed away do to heart failure. He had fell and broke his leg at home. While at the hospital, his heart gave out. He too, was brought back to Antwerp buried with his family. All three brothers were never married.
