MILITARY HISTORY IN PAULDING COUNTY

Dr. Herbert Earl Moore born in New Castle, Pennsylvania, June 20, 1892, the son of Alexander Backus born August 25, 1862 in Paulding County and Mary Ellen (Cheman) Moore born January 27, 1866 in Emerald Township, Paulding County. This couple was married January 23, 1889 in Paulding.

By 1900, this couple along with daughter Edith Pearl born February 12, 1890 and son Herbert, were living in Paulding. Alexander was a traveling salesman. By 1910, this family was still living in Paulding on Cherry Street. Alexander was working as a merchant at the Marble shop. Edith and Herbert were in school. Herbert was working odd jobs.

Between the years of 1912 and 1916, Herbert went to Michigan Medical College in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Herbert moved to Pennsylvania and on June 5, 1917, at Elwood, Pennsylvania, Herbert registered for the World War One draft. He is listed as medium build, brown hair and brown eyes. He was assigned to Company D. 1st Army Artillery as a Medic. He served until June 30, 1919. I believe in 1919, Herbert married a gal named Ada S. Schermerhorn. She was born June 5, 1893 in New York. They had a son named Herbert Earl Moore Jr. He was born February 9, 1922 in Baltimore City, Maryland. Herbert went on to attend the University of Chicago and John Hopkins Medical School. He got his Medical Degree from Johns Hopkins. He did his internship at Henry Ford Hospital. By 1926, Herbert, Ada and son Herbert Jr., moved to Birmingham, Michigan. On September 6, 1929, Herbert’s mother, Mary Ellen passed away in Paulding from cancer. She was buried in Live Oak Cemetery. 

By 1930, Dr. Moore and family, are living at 383 Harrison Street, Birmingham, Oakland County, Michigan. Between the years of 1930 and 1932, Herbert divorced Ada. Herbert Jr. lived with his mother Ada. Herbert Sr. remarries a gal named Margaret. They had a daughter named Joann born in 1932 in Owosso, Michigan. On September 24, 1936, Dr. Moore had surgery for cancer of the pancreas at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital.

On October 6, 1936, at 3:00, Dr. Herbert Earl Moore Sr. passed away at the Henry Ford Memorial Hospital from Carcinoma of the pancreas and liver, also from secondary anemia. Services were held at the St. James Episcopal Church in Birmingham, Michigan with the Rev. Warner L. Forsyth officiating. Dr. Moore’s body was returned to Paulding where services were held at the Live Oak Cemetery with burial in lot 323, block G., grave 2. 

His son Herbert Jr., was going to Pre Medical School when World War Two started. He enlisted to serve as an infantry officer. He served in the 317th Infantry, 80th Division, Third Army Corp. (Patton’s Division). 2nd Lieutenant Herbert Earl Moore Jr. was killed in action October 10, 1944 in France. He was buried in Lorraine American Cemetery and Memorial, plot C., row 27, grave 49.
