MILITARY HISTORY IN PAULDING COUNTY

John Walter Musgrave was born in Paulding, Ohio March 8, 1887. The son of John Lynch Musgrave, born February 15, 1845 in Seneca County Ohio. And Elizabeth M. (Good) born August 12, 1848 in Pennsylvania. This couple was married in Seneca County Ohio May 3, 1874. John was a Civil War Veteran who served with Company B. 195th Ohio Volunteer Infantry.

On February 16, 1876, a daughter, Gertrude H. was born. This couple was living in Kirby, Wyandot County, Ohio. On September 8, 1874, a son Arthur Clarence was born, followed by Charles Alva February 16, 1877.

By 1900, the family was living in Paulding. Daughter Gertrude and her husband Clyde Parent, were living with the parents. Arthur was off to school to become a dentist, as well as Charles. John Walter  served in the Ohio National Guard for four years. John Walter then moved out west and worked as a brakeman on the railroad. On October 29, 1906 in Hamilton, Ohio, John  married a gal named Ethel (Englehart).  

By 1910, John and Ethel were living in Montana. Ethel gave birth to a daughter, Virginia Bessie Musgrave July 28, 1910. On May 19, 1912, John’s mother, Elizabeth passed away. She was buried in Live Oak Cemetery in Paulding. John Walter stayed in the military and served as a corporal at Ft. Bay, Harrison, Indiana. On June 1, 1917, John registered for the draft. He was listed as medium height and build, blue eyes, black hair. Brother Arthur registered for the draft July 5, 1918.

He was shipped overseas and assigned to the Dental Corp. as a 1st Lieutenant. He was Honorably Discharged August 16, 1919. He passed away in Lucas County from cancer October 4, 1921. He was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Ohio City, Ohio. Charles had been in the military serving in the Philippines during the Spanish American War. He was discharged in 1902. He attained the rank of Corporal. While living in Sherwood, Ohio he enlisted to serve in the Army. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant May of 1918. Serving overseas in France in the Muese-Argonne Defensive Sector. Promoted to Captain in the Dental Corp. Awarded the Purple Heart, Silver Star for valor. He was Honorably Discharged July 9, 1919. He passed away April 24, 1945 in Defiance.

He was buried in Live Oak Cemetery. John Walter served in France in the Muese-Argonne Defensive Sector. After returning home, John served at Camp Sherman, Ohio and Washington D.C. He was Honorably Discharged March 4, 1919. In 1925, John returned to Montana to serve in various military special assignments. 

On November 1, 1925, his father, John Lynch Musgrave passed away in Latty. He was buried in Live Oak Cemetery. John stayed in the military serving as an instructor. John, Ethel and Virginia, lived in Toledo on Maplewood Avenue. By 1930, John and Ethel were living in Detroit, Michigan. John still working for the Government. By 1940, John and Ethel were living at 265 South Mildred Street in Dearborn, Michigan. John was a Manager at the Veterans Administration. 

In 1942, John registered for the World War Two draft, he was not selected. On July 3, 1949, while living in Alpena, Michigan, John Walter Musgrave passed away. He was buried in Live Oak Cemetery.
