5th Graders in Paulding County will participate in the Annual GREEN Day, or Growing Resources in Education Exploration in Nature, Event. Children will learn from experts who have been invited to present to students on the topics of Water Quality, Soil Health, Forestry, and Wildlife. Wildlife officers from ODNR will also be part of the event to work with kids on archery and gun safety skills, and fishing pole casting.
Another new addition this year is the augmented reality sandbox. It allows users to create topography models by shaping real sand, which is then augmented in real time by an elevation color map, topographic contour lines, and simulated water. The system teaches geographic, geologic, and hydrologic concepts. The day will be a fun, interactive, learning experience. Participants are given a t-shirt and lunch is also provided thanks to our generous community sponsors.
Studies have shown that getting kids outside and connected to nature is important for their growth and development. It is also important for the conservation and protection of natural resources. This event supports both concepts. “We look forward to getting kids outside for this unique learning experience. This experience is a great way to learn about our natural resources and develop an appreciation for them,” says Anna Gurney, Education Specialist, Paulding SWCD.
With the help of the volunteers from Paulding High School FFA, the presenters, and other volunteers and sponsors, Paulding Soil & Water Conservation District will be able to share this message with approximately 250 kids this year.
