MILITARY HISTORY IN PAULDING OHIO

Clyde Barton Overmyer was born October 12, 1897 in Payne. The son of John Arthur Overmyer, born March 22, 1868 in Brownsville, Licking County, Ohio. And Ida Alice (Barton) Overmyer, born March 25, 1872 in Bluffton, Wells County, Indiana. This couple was married June 27, 1889.

They became the proud parents to Mytle Bloom Overmyer born in 1891. Followed by Orville in 1893, Clyde in 1897, Howard Opal in 1899.

By 1900, this family was living in Jackson, Allen County, Indiana. John was working in a factory. By 1910, the family had added children, Guy Kenneth in 1902, Emmett Gaylord in 1904, Lucille Berniece in 1907. Orcellia was born in 1910 and died later that year and Dewain Elmo in 1914. 

The family was living on Laura Street, in Payne, Harrison Township. John was a railroad section foreman. Most of the children were in school. 

Clyde Barton Overmyer

On May 23, 1917, Clyde traveled to Hicksville and joined the National Guard. He  served as a private in Company E. 2nd Ohio National Guard. He was listed as 5’8″, light hair, blue eyes, ruddy complexion, and a laborer by trade. As World War One broke, Clyde was enrolled into Company F. 145th Infantry, 37th Division. On May 10, 1918, Clyde was promoted to Corporal. On June 15, 1918, Clyde was sent to Hoboken, New Jersey, where he boarded the ship, “Leviathon”, and set sail for France. 

He served in the Meuse-Argonne and Ypre-Lys defensive sector. He served in the army with excellent character until April 2, 1919. He was honorably discharged April 21, 1919. After returning home, Clyde moved to Ft. Wayne, living on Lafayette Street with his Aunt Pearl and Uncle Jesse and three cousins.

Clyde worked as a baker in a bakery. Clyde met a gal named Mary Ellen Trout. She was born in 1901. On June 20, 1925, this couple married in Hillsdale, Michigan. On March 23, 1923, a daughter, Jacqueline B. Overmyer was born. 

On April 28, 1929, Clyde’s father, John, passed away. He was buried in Lehman Cemetery. By 1930, Clyde, Mary, Jacqueline and Mary’s mother, Edna H. Trout lived at 3717 John Street in Ft. Wayne. Clyde worked as a baker. 

Oliver Donovan Overmyer

In 1937, Clyde, Mary and Jacqueline moved to 3117 South Monroe Street in Ft. Wayne. Clyde worked as a production manager for Holsum Bakery in Ft. Wayne. Clyde had been having health issues and on February 25, 1939, was Clyde’s last day working on the job. Clyde was taken to Lutheran Hospital in Ft. Wayne, where he was suffering from Coronary Disease and Acute Cardiac Infibulation. He will pass away from Pneumonia March 13, 1939. He will be buried in Greenlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Ft. Wayne. Indiana. Clyde’s wife will pass away in 1977 and she will be buried alongside her husband. Their daughter, Jacqueline will marry and will pass away in 1981.
