WOODBURN – On a night that saw a triple overtime battle in varsity boys basketball action, it was visiting Angola who outlasted host Woodlan 81-72 recently in non-league play.
The host Warriors opened a 16-10 lead at the end of one quarter before the visiting Hornets cut into the deficit and pulled within 25-21 entering the halfway point of the contest.
Angola picked up 14 markers in the third quarter compared to a dozen for Woodlan as the Warriors held a slim 37-35 margin going into the fourth period.
In the final stanza of regulation, the Steuben County squad picked up 16 points while the Warriors bucketed 14 to knot the contest at 51-51 entering the first overtime.
Both teams then scored nine points in the first extra session to keep it tied at 60-60 before each squad picked up seven markers in the second overtime for a 67-67 contest.
The third overtime proved to be the difference as Angola added 14 points compared to just five for Woodlan in giving the Hornets an 81-72 decision.
Tyler Ruple paced the Hornets with 20 points in the contest, leading a quartet of Angola players in double figures.
Niles Knox bucketed 15 points to aid the Hornet cause with Cru Weber chipping in a dozen and Ryan Stuckey contributed ten.
Ben Thomas and Tommy Caswell each totaled eight points for Angola with Landon Leach finishing with six and Kyler Huscher picked up two.
Trey Yoder topped all scorers in the contest with 26 points for Woodlan and Oliver Adams picked up 16 for the Warriors.
Mason Moore also reached twin digits for Woodlan with 11 points.
Other scorers for the Warriors were Keaton Delagrange (eight), Jordan Halsey (six), Ashtin Jacquay (two) and Zach Scheiderer (two).
