THE BUTTON BOX

Penny for your thoughts: By Nancy Whitaker

I wrote my last column about things my Mom and my grandma did not have in their life time. They didn’t have many modern conveniences but they were content with what they had.

Now my thoughts go back to some things they did have  that i think is pretty nice.

One thing grandma always had was a button box. It was a round tin full of all kinds of buttons. As a kid it was fun going through all those buttons and thinking of what piece of clothing they came off of.

If any of the family members lost a button, who knows where, grandma got out her button box, pulled out maybe a non matching button, needle and thread and sewed the button back on. Did it match? Sometimes, but it did the job.  I never had a button box but i will say i sure would like to go through grandmas again.

Grandma always wore an apron and  if gardening a sun bonnet. You never knew what was in her apron pockets. She may have a piece of candy, a penny, a handkerchief, or maybe flour on it from baking her sugar cookies.

Living in a fairly good sized house, all the floors were linoleum. Of course rag rugs were on the floors which added brightness and color.

In addition to linoleum floors ,adorning the windows were plastic curtains. Grandmas was the only place i ever saw plastic curtains.

From what i have read, plastic curtains was bought at Woolworths and were cheaper to buy.  Now, they are collectibles.

Granny also had a tambourine which she played at church. We used to sing the old hymns and had lots of musicians with drums and guitars. Granny would beat that tambourine on her knee, palm of her hands and even on her elbow.

That old tambourine is now at my daughter’s home with memories of those old church days.

My little brother and i loved Grandmas button box, her various aprons with goodies and if we could sneak that tambourine outside we practiced our beats with it.

So many things cross our minds about earlier times and earlier days. Some of us may remember or have  a button box, plastic curtains or an old tambourine.  if you have any of these items let me know and i will give you a Penny for Your Thoughts.
